Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Remake Will Hit Streaming Later This Year
After a series of delays, Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch may soon arrive on Disney+.
The upcoming film will tell the story of “the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction. Pursuing aliens, social workers, and the idea of the bond of family figure into the proceedings.”

The film was originally announced in 2018, with Mike Van Waes hired to write the screenplay. Chris Kekaniokalani Bright would subsequently take over and rewrite the script before filming began.
A Series of Delays
Production was initially delayed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually beginning in earnest in July 2022. In April 2023, however, filming was shut down due to a trailer fire, which authorities suspected was started intentionally. Following an investigation, filming resumed.

In May 2023, however, production was paused again with the onset of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
As the choppy production schedule was playing out, Lilo & Stitch faced an avalanche of criticism online when Kahiau Machdo, who was set to portray David Kawena in the film, was discovered to have used racial slurs on social media. He was eventually replaced with Kaipot Dudoit.

The Film Is on the Way!
Finally, almost six years after the film was initially announced, Lilo & Stitch wrapped production earlier this year.
A new report from The Hollywood Reporter says that the film is now expected to finally arrive on Disney+ later this year.

With a cast that includes Maia Kealoha (Lilo), Zach Galifianakis (Jumba), Billy Magnussen (Pleakley), and Chris Sanders returning as the voice of Stitch, fans should be in for a treat.
