George Lucas Says “A Lot of Ideas Got Lost” in the ‘Star Wars’ Sequel Trilogy
George Lucas took center stage at the Cannes Film Festival today, as the Hollywood legend recieved h a Palme d’Or for his contribution to cinema at the 77th Cannes festival today.
During the festivities, Lucas took a look back at his career and gave, perhaps, his most comprehensive thoughts on Star Wars in years.
In addition to defending the franchise from critics who have accused Star Wars of lacking diversity and explaining his original vision for the prequel trilogy, Lucas also discussed what has happened with the franchise since he sold it to Disney.
Lucas’s Thoughts on the Sequels
It has been no secret that Lucas was not a fan of the sequel trilogy. This time around, however he took a more diplomatic approach to the topic.
“I was the one one who really knew what Star Wars was…who actually knew this world, because there’s a lot to it. The force, for example, nobody understood the force,” he said. “When they started other ones after I sold the company, a lot of the ideas that were in [the original] sort of got lost. But that’s the way it is. You give it up, you give it up.”
Considering we are less than 10 years from the time Lucas referred to Disney as “white slavers”, today’s response was downright diplomatic.
Defending the Original Trilogy Edits
While on the topic of Star Wars, Lucas also took the opportunity to defend his decision to go back and edit the original trilogy.
“I’m a firm believer that the director, or the writer, or the filmmaker should have a right to have his movie be the way he wants it,” Lucas said.
Twelve years after selling Star Wars to Disney, it is clear that Lucas is still invested in the franchise. Now, however, he can look on like the rest of us.
