Filoni: ‘Ahsoka’ Will Center On The “Master-Apprentice” Dynamic
From the beginning, the central relationship in Star Wars has been the bond between master and apprentice.
The history of the franchise can largely be told in Jedi couplets. One master and one apprentice. Over time, we have seen the galaxy unfold through the prism of this dynamic, whether it be Obi-Wan and Luke in the original trilogy, Obi-Wan and Anakin in the prequels, or Luke and Rey in the sequel trilogy, there has always been two at the heart of the story.
Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano
Perhaps the most well developed master-apprentice relationship, however, is the one between Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano.
The duo fought together through the Clone Wars, where Ahsoka grew from young padawan to full fledged Jedi.
The comradery and bond between the two was at the heart of The Clone Wars animated series, and is what made the show’s finals season so heartbreaking.
Star Wars Rebels, meanwhile, explored Ahsoka coming to the horrific realization that Anakin Skywalker had not died at the onset of Order 66, but instead had been corrupted by the Dark Side and transformed into Darth Vader.
‘Ahsoka’ Will Center On The Master
According to series creator Dave Filoni, the upcoming Ahsoka series will continue to center on the master-apprentice relationship.
“It’s very much the idea of apprenticeship,” says Favreau. “The need for those two groups to come together in order to pass down the knowledge and help save the world, in the case of Star Wars.”
In the upcoming series, not only will Ahsoka have to come to grips with the fall of her mentor, but she will also take a young hero under her wing in the form of the Mandalorian Sabine Wren.
Based on the show’s trailers, it seems their master-apprentice relationship may need some work.
Part of a Legacy
Still, as executive producer Cassie Beck notes, Ahsoka will be carrying on a legacy that is foundational to Star Wars.
“All of that wisdom gets passed down over those generations,”Beck says. “We have Qui-Gon Jinn, who is the master of Obi-Wan, who is the master of Anakin Skywalker. And, by being trained by Anakin, Ahsoka is a part of that legacy as well.”
Ahsoka will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning August 23.
