FX and the Estate of James Clavell Are Working on Two More Seasons of ‘Shogun’
Since its release in February of this year, the FX series Shogun has proven to be a critical and commercial smash hit. The series has dominated the streaming charts since it debuted and currently holds a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell, the series follows “the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.”
Through its nine-week run, Shogun became FX’s most-watched show ever based on global hour streamed. Now, it sounds like Disney wants to keep the gravy train rolling.
Two More Seasons of Shogun are on the Way
While Shogun was originally conceived as a mini-series, Disney announced today that FX, Hulu, and the Estate of James Clavell are working to develop two additional seasons of the series.

The show’s creative team, which includes Justin Marks, Rachel Kondo, Michaela Clavell, and series star and producer Hiroyuki Sanda, are on board for development.
While a production timeline has not been finalized yet, Disney says that a writers’ room is being assembled, with a start date of this summer.

Although future seasons of Shogun would have to stray from the Clavell source material, the author based his novel on Japanese historical events, which could provide a path forward.
Hopefully, we will have more details and an official order from FX soon.
