Robert Downey Jr. Says Seeing Jeremy Renner Celebrating at Chris Evans’s Wedding Was “Mind-Blowing”
Last September, the Avengers assembled to celebrate Chris Evans’s wedding, meeting for the first time since Jeremy Renner’s near-fatal injury in January of 2023.
The joyous occasion was the first time that Chris Hemsworth had seen Renner in person.

“He sent us all a sort of a doped out, hospital, beat-up image and said, ‘All good, guys.’ And then I didn’t hear from him for a while as he was in the thick of it,” Hemsworth told Vanity Fair.
According to Robert Downey Jr., seeing Renner “fully recovered and ready to celebrate” was truly miraculous.

“If there’s one characteristic we’d all agree is paramount, it’s resilience,” Downey added about the Avengers crew. “To see Renner embody that literally, and in the context of what was basically a Portuguese American wedding, was mind-blowing. Fully recovered and ready to celebrate. So, yes—miracles happen.”
The Avengers Have Continued to Support Renner
Since Renner’s injury, the Avengers have proven to be a tight-knit group.
During an appearance with James Corden earlier this year, Renner revealed that Anthony Mackie was the first person he remembers seeing when he regained consciousness.

“One of the first people at my hospital bed was Anthony Mackie. He was in Vegas,” Renner recalled. “He shot over, and he’s the first person I saw when I woke up. And we don’t talk all the time. We’re not, like, hanging out all the time, because the problem with having, you know, actor friends, everyone’s so busy and now we’re all parents and we never see each other. We rarely talk to each other, but the connectedness that we have is an always thing.”
Just months after the accident, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson also flew to Renner’s bedside.

“No tears at all. A lot of laughs and smiles and hugs,” Evans says. “Leave it to Jeremy to take something this potentially tragic and turn it into something so inspiring.”
Seeing Renner back on his feet and celebrating was a moving moment for his Avengers co-stars.

“There was an astounding sense of gratitude from him around just being alive,” Hemsworth concluded.
