Disney+ Will Begin Password Sharing Crackdown This June
As Bob Iger and The Walt Disney Company continue to chase profitability in streaming, Disney+ is set to roll out its password-sharing crackdown en masse this summer.
In an interview with CNBC Thursday, Iger revealed that Disney+ will begin cracking down on password sharing in some countries this June and then expand the policy everywhere in September.

Previously, Disney+ has updated its terms of service to outlaw password sharing. Up until this point, however, the streamer has not enforced the new policy.

“We certainly have established this as a real priority,” Iger said on Disney’s fiscal third-quarter earnings call. “We actually think that there’s an opportunity here to help us grow our business.”
Following in Netflix’s Footsteps
Crackdowns on password sharing have become standard practice for streaming services since Netflix implemented a new policy last year. The streaming service saw a jump in signups following its change in policy. In fact, according to Antenna, Netflix added 100,000 new accounts in the two days after it banned password sharing last May.
During his interview Thursday, Iger called Netflix the “gold standard.”

“Netflix is the gold standard in streaming,” Iger said in the interview. “They’ve done a phenomenal job and a lot of different directions. I actually have very, very high regard for what they’ve accomplished. If we can only accomplish what they’ve accomplished, that would be great.”
Hulu Began Its Crackdown in March
With Disney hoping to turn streaming into a growth business, it is doing all it can to continue to increase its margins. Earlier this year, the company’s other streaming service, Hulu, began cracking down on password sharing itself.

Whether or not the password-sharing crackdown helps Disney achieve its goals remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that a new era of streaming will soon be upon us.
