Disney Gives Fans a First Look at an Older Moana from ‘Moana 2’
During today’s Walt Disney Company annual meeting, Disney CEO Bob Iger gave fans a first look at the upcoming Moana 2.
The surprise sequel to Disney’s Moana was announced earlier this year and is set to hit theaters on November 27.
During his presentation to shareholders today, Iger shared a first look at an older Moana, once again finding adventure on the open seas.
What We Know About ‘Moana 2’
Moana 2 will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr., while the film’s music will be written by Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’o, and Mark Mancie. Lin Manuel-Miranda, who wrote the songs for the first film, will not be returning.
Both Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson are set to reprise their roles as Moana and Maui, respectively. While Johnson was involved in Disney’s announcement that Moana 2 was in development, Cravalho’s involvement was not a sure thing. She had previously announced she would not play Moana in live-action.
“I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent. To honor our incredible Pacific people’s cultures and communities that help inspire her story. And I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representations to come. Mahalo,” Cravalho said.
Luckily, late last month, the actress announced that she would be returning to voice Moana in the upcoming sequel.
‘Moana’ Continues to Be Immensely Popular
Interestingly, the film began development as a Disney+ series. According to Bob Iger, the studio was so blown away by the series that they decided to turn it into a theatrical sequel.
As Moana continues to dominate the streaming charts, the 2016 film has shown a lasting power that few animated films have. Luckily, fans will not have to wait much longer for Moana 2 to arrive.
Moana 2 will hit theaters on November 27th, 2024.
