Tom Sawyer Island’s Barrel Bridge Has Returned to Magic Kingdom After 9 Months
For over 50 years, Tom Sawyer Island has been an oasis in Magic Kingdom, a respite from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the park, and a place where one’s imagination can run wild.
While the rest of Disney World increasingly relies on screens and technology to tell their story, Tom Sawyer Island is a true experiential attraction. The island gives back what you put into it and has made lasting memories for generations.
As the Magic Kingdom continues to move away from its Americana roots, Tom Sawyer Island remains an attraction bred in literature, infused with Disney magic, and set in a real place and time.
The Barrel Bridge Was Removed Eight Months Ago
Between Injun Joe’s Cave, Harper’s Mill, and Fort Langhorn, Tom Sawyer Island has its fair share of iconic locations, but interestingly the thing that most guests remember from the island is not any of the well-themed vignettes. It is the barrel bridge.
If you have ever been to Tom Sawyer Island, then you likely remember your first rickety trip across the barrel bridge. For many young Disney fans, it is something of a rite of passage.
Perhaps this explains the fear and trepidation earlier this year when the barrel bridge was removed from Tom Sawyer Island.
At a time when the last vestiges of the original Frontierland were being removed, many feared the bridge would not come back.
The Bridge Has Returned!
Well, I am happy to report that those fears were unfounded. Nine months after the barrel bridge was removed from Tom Sawyer Island, it has returned.
When visiting Magic Kingdom today, we were greeted by a welcomed site — the Tom Sawyer Island barrel bridge has been reinstalled!
It looks like the bridge’s removal was just a refurbishment.
Hopefully, the bridge will continue to enthrall guests for another 50 years!
