Is Tobey Maguire’s ‘Spider-Man 4’ In Development?
When Tobey Maguire donned his Spider-Man suit for the first time in 14 years for Spider-Man: No Way Home, he gave hope to a generation of fans who have long wished for a Sam Rami-directed Spider-Man 4.
For those who don’t remember, a fourth installment in the original Spider-Man film franchise was announced in 2007, with Raimi attached to direct and Maguire and Kristen Dunst set to reprise their roles.

At various times, it was reported that the film would explore the transformation of Dr. Curt Connors into the Lizard and potentially feature John Malkovich as Vulture and Anne Hathaway as Felicia Hardy.
After a series of disagreements between Sony and Raimi, however, the studio announced in 2010 that plans for Spider-Man 4 had been canceled. Raimi had reportedly been disappointed in how Spider-Man 3 turned out (due in large part to Sony meddling with the film’s plot) and the strict deadline that the studio had given him.

Eventually, Sony would move away from the Raimi franchise altogether and launch a new Spider-Man series starring Andrew Garfield.
Fans Have Held Out Hope For ‘Spider-Man 4’
Obviously, Spider-Man 4 never hit theaters. In recent years, however, Raimi, Dunst, and Maguire have expressed varying levels of interest in revisiting the project. Now, one Spider-Man star is fanning the flames even more.
In a recent interview with the New York Post, Thomas Haden Church, who played Sandman in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, said that he had heard a new Maguire Spider-Man film may be on the way.

“Sam Raimi is doing, from what I’ve heard, he’s going to do another stand-alone ‘Spider-Man’ movie with Tobey,” Church said.
The film has “gotten sort of floated a little bit.”
Sony Has an Option For Church to Return
Like Maguire, Church reprised his role as Sandman in Spider-Man: Now Way Home. Interstingly, according to Church, Sony still had an option for the actor to return.

“They had an option for me to do another,” Church said. “Of course, everybody’s asking, like, well, does [‘No Way Home’] fulfill that? And so [Raimi] said, ‘No, no, we still want to have the option to use him in a stand-alone Tobey movie.’ ”
With Kevin Feige promising that another Tom Holland film is in the works and the multiverse set to come together for Avengers: Secret Wars, perhaps we will see Church and Maguire soon, even if another Raimi Spider-Man film does not happen.
