Anne Hathaway Reflects on Almost Starring in ‘Spider-Man 4’
Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 remains one of the greatest “what ifs?” in Marvel history. Nearly two decades after the Tobey Maguire-led trilogy ended, fans still hold out hope that Raimi will get the gang together again for a fourth installment in the franchise.
For those who don’t remember, back before the onset of Iron Man and the MCU, Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man film franchise was the biggest thing Marvel had ever done.
Despite the mixed reaction to Spider-Man 3, the film was an undeniable blockbuster, grossing $894.9 million worldwide and easily becoming the highest-grossing film in the trilogy.
The Life and Death of ‘Spider-Man 4’
Following the film’s success, Spider-Man 4 entered development with the idea that another trilogy could be filmed.
With Sam Raimi set to direct and Maguire, Kristen Dunst, and the rest of the core cast ready to reprise their roles, it seemed as if the story of Spider-Man was only beginning.
Spider-Man 4 would have finally seen the transformation of Dr. Curt Conners into the Lizard, while also perhaps introducing John Malkovich as Vulture and Anne Hathaway as Felicia Hardy.
Eventually, however, Spider-Man 4 fell apart. According to insiders, Sam Raimi did not like Sony’s interference with the project (the studio had previously insisted that Venom be included in Spider-Man 3), and he hated the potential scripts.
In January 2010, Sony announced that Spider-Man 4 was cancelled. Instead, the franchise would be rebooted as The Amazing Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield playing Peter Parker.
Anne Hathaway Never Put On Black Cat’s Costume
In a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused, Anne Hathaway revealed that despite signing on to play Felicia Hardy/Black Cat, she never read a script for the part or put on Hardy’s iconic costume.
“I got the part and, yeah, it just…I think that’s probably more the producers’ story to tell than mine, should they ever decide to tell it,” she explained.
While Hathaway was excited to join the popular Spider-Man franchise, she was quick to point out that the web-slinger has done just fine without her.
“The Spider-Man universe has gone on to be so enormous and so thrilling. It’s just reinventing itself and all of those things. So I wouldn’t want to make more of it than is necessary.”
“Trust Deeper and Keep Going”
While she never got a chance to play Felica Hardy, Hathaway believes that missing out on the role helped her score another iconic role.
“If [‘Spider-Man 4’] had gotten made, I don’t know if I would’ve been considered for [‘The Dark Knight Rises’],” Hathaway noted. “Perhaps [Christopher Nolan] would’ve said, ‘No, she’s occupied in another universe.’”
In the end, she has no hard feelings.
You learn to just go. The right role finds the right person, and sometimes it’s you and sometimes not,” Hathaway said. “When it doesn’t happen, trust deeper and keep going. It sounds maybe corny but you really do have to keep it grateful.”
