‘The Acolyte’ Gets Disney+ Premiere Date
After what feels like an eternity of waiting, Lucasfilm has announced that The Acolyte will officially premiere June 4 on Disney+.
The series will bring the era of the High Republic, which is roughly 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, to live action for the first time.
The Acolyte will not only explore a new era of Star Wars history but also tell the story from the perspective of a young Sith apprentice.
A Star Wars Series Without War?
For showrunner Leslie Headland, the setting raised an interesting question — how do you tell a Star Wars story without any war?
“We’re looking at a time period where there is peace throughout the galaxy. It was very challenging and interesting to make a Star Wars with no war in it. So the question became, Well, what should the show be about if it’s not going to be about galactic conflict?”
Initially announced in 2020, the new Star Wars series stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss.
According to a synopsis released by Lucasfilm today:
“An investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.”
A Trailer is Coming Soon
Both the cast and crew behind The Acolyte have promised that fans are in for a surprise. Headland has also talked about turning familiar Star Wars troupes on their head.
“I think Star Wars is always about some version of the underdog versus the institution. And I just thought it was very interesting to do a show about the bad guys,” she said. “It’s almost flipped. We have more Jedi than you’ve seen in any of the Star Wars content. But, at the same time, I think you see more morally ambiguous characters.”
Along with a release date, Disney is also promising that The Acolyte’s first trailer will debut tomorrow. So, stay tuned!
