Nicolas Cage Gives Disappointing Update on ‘National Treasure 3’
Following the release of 2022’s National Treasure: Edge of History, it appeared that the history-based action franchise was coming back in a big way.
While Nicolas Cage was not involved in the National Treasure streaming series, the show’s creation seemed to fan interest in a National Treasure 3 starring Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates.
A third installment was reported to be in development as early as 2008. Over the next 15 years, reports have circulated that the project was being worked on in some way or another.
Cage Gives a Disappointing Update
Despite the actor previously sounding interested in reprising his role, in a recent interview with Screen Rant, the actor gave a disappointing update on any potential National Treasure sequel.
“Here we go! See, you’re the one that brings these things up, and they go out, and they eclipse everything else. No, there is no ‘National Treasure 3.’ If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, okay? It’s not there,” he said.
Based on Cage’s response, it sounds like it is Disney, not Cage, that does not want to continue the franchise.
Is Disney Done With ‘National Treasure’?
With National Treasure: Edge of History failing to develop an audience and being canceled after one season, perhaps it is unsurprising that Disney would be hesitant to move the franchise forward.
Still, both National Treasure films that Cage was involved in were box office success. With the original film’s principal cast getting older, Disney may not have many more opportunities to capitalize on the franchise’s popularity.
For now, however, National Treasure 3 sounds like another one of Benjamin Gate’s myths.
