Fueled By ‘Poor Things,’ Searchlight Pictures Brings Home Five Academy Awards
While 2023 was undeniably a tough year for The Walt Disney Company at the box office, the company still managed to bring home five Oscars last night, thanks to the success of Searchlight Pictures.
Although Disney has long been a perennial winner at the Academy Awards, last night was a rather subdued night for the company. Disney’s losing streak in animation continued when Elemental was beaten out by The Boy and the Heron for Best Animated Feature.
Marel Studios, meanwhile, lost out on the Best Visual Effects Oscar for the 15th time when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was bested by Godzilla Minus One.
Still, it wasn’t all bad news for Disney last night.
Searchlight Pictures Wins Big
Searchlight Pictures brought Disney home five Oscars last night, with the critical darling Poor Things winning four awards alone.
In total, Poor Things won Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Production Design (James Price, Shona Heath), Best Costume Design (Holly Waddington), and Best Makeup & Hairstyling (Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier, Josh Weston).
Rounding out Searchlight’s wins was The Last Repair Shop, which won Best Documentary Short Films. The Disney+ short “tells the story of four unassuming heroes who ensure no student is deprived of the joy of music.”
Interestingly, Searchlight head David Greenbaum was recently promoted to President, Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios.
With Inside Out 2 and Deadpool 3 slated to be released this year, Disney will look to bounce back at next year’s Oscars. Still, even in a down year, the company managed to bring home some hardware.
