Disney Is Asking For Up to $2.2 Million For a 30-Second Ad During the Oscars
Although ratings for awards shows have been in freefall for years, Dsiney is still charging a premium for commercial slots for the upcoming Academy Awards.
With just a few weeks before the 96th Oscars, Disney executives are still working hard to sell advertising slots, according to three people familiar with the negotiations told Variety.
While CBS’s recent Grammys broadcast showed viewership growth, skepticism around the value of advertising during awards shows remains high.
Disney Says They Are Ahead of Schedule
Still, Disney says they are actually ahead of schedule.
“While we’re not yet sold out, we are approaching sell out,” Disney said in a statement .”We’re three weeks away from the show and well ahead of where we typically are in any given year.”
Disney is reportedly seeing between $1.7 million and $2.2 million for a 30-second advertisement during the upcoming Academy Awards. That number is up over last year’s $1.6-$2.2 million range.
Award Show Ratings Have Plummeted
The Oscars have traditionally been seen as the kind of coveted event that draws a broad audience that skews to females. Last year, advertisers spent $117.4 million in advertising, down 15% from the year before.
Still, last year’s Academy Awards managed to bring in an average audience of 18.7 million viewers, which was the Oscars’ best audience since 2020. It was also a far cry, however, from the 57 million viewers that tuned into the 1998 broadcast.
While Disney is continuing to put on a brave front, time is ticking, and slots need to be filled.
