Bridgit Mendler Adds “CEO” to Her Resume as She Launches New Satellite Startup
Former Disney Channel star Bridgit Mendler may have one of the most impressive resumes in history.
In addition to her starring roles in Good Luck Charlie, Undateable, Nashville, and Lemonade Mouth, Mendler tackled music, scoring hits like “Ready or Not” and “Hurricane.”
Then Mendler once again shifted her focus, diving headfirst into her education. After getting a degree from the University of Southern California, Mendler attended MIT as a graduate student.
As if that wasn’t impressive enough, she is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at MIT and a law degree at Harvard University, where she is co-president of the school’s space society.
Launching Northwood Space
Now Mendler can add CEO to her title, as the former Lemonade Mouth star will lead the startup Northwood Space, based in El Segundo, California.
“The vision is a data highway between Earth and space,” Mendler told CNBC.
Rather than build rockets or satellites, Northwood will mass-produce ground stations. Also known as teleports, the ground stations connect to satellites in space.
Northwood has already attracted high-profile venture investors, with $6 million raised from investors including Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, and Also Capital.
The Idea Formed During the Pandemic
According to Mendler, the idea for the company originated while she was spending time with her family during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“While everybody else was making their sourdough starters, we were building antennas out of random crap we could find at Home Depot…and receiving data from [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] satellites,” Mendler said.
“For me, why the ground-side matters is because it actually is about bringing the impacts of space home to people.”
After conquering television, music, and MIT, Medler wants to make space more accessible.
“Space is getting easier along so many different dimensions but still the actual exercise of sending data to and from space is difficult. You have difficulty finding an access point for contacting your satellite,” she explains.
What an amazing career.
