With Disney Shut Out, ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Dominates the Annie Awards
For the first time in 32 years, the Annie Awards did not nominate a Disney or Pixar film for the coveted Best Feature Film.
The snub by the most prestigious animation awards speaks to the difficult year that Disney had in 2023. While Elemental overcame a rough start at the box office to become a sleeper hit, Disney’s Wish was an unmitigated box office bomb.

‘Across the Spider-Verse’ Wins Big
With no competition from Disney, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse dominated last night’s 51st Annie Awards, bringing home seven awards, including Best Best Feature.

The win now makes Across the Spider-Verse the frontrunner to take home the Best Animated Feature Oscar at the upcoming 91st Academy Awards.
While Disney did not produce Across the Spider-Verse, as the owner of Marvel Studios, the company is likely happy with the win.

Since the Best Animated Feature Oscar debuted in 2002, 14 of the 21 films to win Annie’s top prize also took home the Oscar.
A Tough Night For Disney
When the Annie Awards dust settled, Disney came home empty-handed. Despite being nominated for seven awards, Elemental was shut out. Wish, meanwhile, failed to nab a nomination.

For the past three decades, Disney has been a mainstay of the Annie Awards. Beauty and the Beast won the first-ever Best Animated Feature Annie, which was followed by iconic films such as Aladdin, The Lion King, Toy Story, and Frozen.

With Inside Out 2 set to be released in 2024, it is unlikely that Disney will get shut out again next year. For now, however, the company’s Annie dominance is over.
