Disney Has Been Shut Out From This Top Awards Category For the First Time in 32 Years
For the first time in 32 years, Disney has been shut out from the Best Animated Feature category at the Annie Awards.
Although Disney released both Wish and Elemental to theaters in 2023, neither film was nominated for the Annie Award’s prestigious category.
This marks the first time Disney has been shut out since the category was introduced in 1992.
A Bad Sign For Disney
The Annie Awards honor excellence in animation and are often seen as a predictor for the Best Animated Feature Oscar category. Disney or Pixar has been nominated for the award every year for over three decades.
Beauty and the Beast won the first-ever Best Animated Feature Annie and was followed by iconic films such as Aladdin, The Lion King, Toy Story, and Frozen.
The snub by the Annie’s is especially glaring for Disney’s Wish. The film was supposed to be the crown jewel of Disney’s 100th Anniversary celebration.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, however, and bombed at the box office.
Elemental meanwhile overcame a slow box office debut to become an unmitigated success for Pixar. The film ended up grossing $500 million worldwide.
The Disney-Less Field
With no Disney films in the category, Nimona, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Suzume, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and The Boy and the Heron will compete for the Best Animated Feature Annie.
With Inside Out 2 set to be released in 2024, it is unlikely that Disney will get shut out again next year. For now, however, the company’s streak is over.
