Kathryn Newton Talks Cassie Lang’s Future and the Formation of the Young Avengers
Last year’s The Marvels was undoubtedly a box office disappointment for Marvel Studios, but it was also an important entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Outside of the character growth we saw in Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambaou, the scenes with the most ramifications for the franchise’s future didn’t come until after the credits rolled.
While Kelcey Grammer’s re-introduction as Beast grabbed headlines, with the X-Men inching closer and closer to finally arriving, the other big tease coming out of The Marvels was the set-up for a possible Young Avengers team.
Here Come The Young Avengers
For those who don’t remember, in The Marvel post-credit scene, Kamala Khan channeled her inner Nick Fury and approached Kate BUshop about joining her new team. During their conversation, Kamala also refers to Ant-Man’s daughter, Cassie Lang.
While she wasn’t involved in The Marvels tag herself, Kathryn Newton (who portrayed Cassie in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, has heard that a Young Avengers team-up could be in the future.
“I did! I heard through the Quantum Realm birdies. And I heard that there was a cool tag, and I was pretty excited to see that and hear that,” Newton said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Growing With the Audience
According to Newton, her goal is for audiences to be able to grow with her character, just like she did with Iron Man.
“In the Marvel universe, you hope for [the possibility of being a Young Avenger]. You hope to be. My whole thing is that I grew up watching Iron Man, and I feel like I grew with that character. So my hope for Cassie Lang has always been to grow with my audience, be it the people who are my age and saw [Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania], or the people who are just starting to watch Marvel movies at a young age. I saw one when I was a little young, but I still love those movies.’
“I Don’t Take Anything For Granted”
While Newton would jump at a chance to return to the MCU, she is not counting her chickens before they hatch.
“So if I get an opportunity to continue the story, then that would be so cool to be a part of a generation that’s growing up with a film. It’s such a big part of my life. But they don’t really tell you. They tell you an overall, but I don’t take anything for granted. I am just trying to get through the day. Let’s finish one movie and then let’s continue. But I would very much also jump at the opportunity to work with Marvel Studios again.”
The Marvels will land on Disney+ on February 7.
