The “Holy Grail” of Star Wars Action Figures Sells For Over $25K at Auction
The “holy grail” of Star Wars action figures has sold at auction for an astonishing £21,000 ($26,685.43), surpassing its estimated sale point.
The 1970s Jawa action figure from Palitoy is “exceptionally rare,” according to auctioneer Jonathan Torode, and its sale garnered worldwide attention.
“I feel honored to have handled another rare part of Star Wars toy history,” Mr. Torode said. “The Jawa figure is still the absolute ultimate for Star Wars collectors.”
A Piece of Star Wars History
As Star Wars fans know, the cloaked Jawas debuted in Star Wars Episode III: A New Hope.
The scavengers of Tatooine sell scrap metal and other “discoveries” to local residents. In the film, they even kidnap R2-D2.
The action figure’s former owner worked for Marvel UK between 1974 and 1979 and received gifts from Palitoy during the promotion of the Star Wars line of Marvel comics.
This particular Jawa figure has a vinyl cape, which was quickly substituted for a cloth cape not long into production. According to Excalibur Auctions, only 10 to 15 vinyl cape Jawas were produced.
The orange-capped Jawa figure is said to be in “excellent condition.”
Other Star Wars Auctions
In July, Excalibur sold an identical Jawa figure for £26,670 ($33,890.32), after the same owner found the figures packed away inside boxes.
Jawa action figures aren’t the only high-end Star Wars collectibles hitting the market. Next month, one of Harrison Ford’s original scripts from the franchise is also set to hit the auction block.
