Natasha Liu Bordizzo Explains Sabine’s Jedi Journey in ‘Ahsoka’
While last year’s Star Wars series Ahsoka was ostensibly about Ahsoka Tano coming to grips with her past and the fall of Anakin Skywalker, the series also explored the relationship between the former Jedi and her own apprentice Sabine Wren.
Sabine was, of course, introduced in Star Wars Rebels, where she established herself as a fierce Mandalorian warrior.
Through her interactions with Kanan Jarrus and her possession of the Dark Saber, however, Sabine was somewhat trained in how to use a lightsaber.
At the conclusion of Rebels, Ahsoka took Sabine as her apprentice, finally giving the Mandalorian Jedi training.
Sabine’s Journey
When audiences were reintroduced to Sabine at the beginning of Ahsoka, the relationship between the Jedi and her apprentice had frayed.
Early in the season, Sabine’s inability to connect with the force put her at a disadvantage against the likes of Shin Hati and Baylan Skoll. It was her struggle with the Force that Dave Filoni thought would make the character more relatable.
“She’s a very talented warrior, but this is not something that’s easy for her, and I think that makes it relatable to people,” Filoni previously told EW. “Generally in Star Wars, we’ve always seen very gifted people be trained, and I wanted to show kind of the opposite. If she achieves her potential, there’s also a danger in that because of the way she is as a warrior. She is prone to anger, and all the things that make Ahsoka concerned could flare up.”
Sabine’s Relationship With the Force Shows Her Growth
Throughout Ahsoka, it is Sabine’s decision-making and her relationship with the Force that drives the series forward.
“There’s been a lot of feedback about how Sabine has made some wrong choices. And she definitely is a very polarizing character for some,” Natasha Liu Bordizz said. “But it was really fun to be able to come from such a dark place and show the arc of where that’s going. I think the show wouldn’t have had as much of a journey without starting with their dynamic being so tense and needing each other, but not really wanting to need each other.”
Sabine and the Force
While some see Sabine’s use of the Force as polarizing, the Force has always been depicted as omnipresent. In the end, Sabine, perhaps more so than any other character, grows throughout Ahsoka. This change is reflected in her relationship with the Force.
“There’s been a lot of feedback about how Sabine has made some wrong choices. And she definitely is a very polarizing character for some,” Bordizzo said. “But it was really fun to be able to come from such a dark place and show the arc of where that’s going. I think the show wouldn’t have had as much of a journey without starting with their dynamic being so tense and needing each other, but not really wanting to need each other.”
Luckily, we will be able to see Sabine’s story continue when Ahsoka returns for Season 2. Perhaps we will even see the first Mandalorian Jedi in centuries.
