James Gunn “Ran Out of Steam” When Writing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’
Although James Gunn is busy crafting the future of the DC Cinematic Universe, the director still has time to talk about Guardians of the Galaxy.
Gunn was the driving force behind the Guardians franchise, leading Peter Quill and his ragtag team through three films.
Interestingly, despite his familiarity with the MCU and specifically the Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn recently revealed that Guardians 3 was the longest writing project he has ever worked on.
Running Out of Steam
According to the Superman: Legacy director, it took “more than a year” to write the film.
When asked if the script needed additional work because of the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Gunn was adamant that Marvel didn’t interfere at all.
“No. Marvel changed nothing. I just had a hard time wrapping things up. And I was running out of steam until I walked away and did The Suicide Squad and came back,” he clarified
“But even then it was not the most pleasant writing experience I’ve ever had. Just pure willpower pushing it through.”
In the end, Gunn’s hard work paid off, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was not only a satisfying ending to the trilogy but also one of the few Marvel success stories in 2023.
Is The Guardians’ Story Over?
While James Gunn will not be involved in the Guardians’ story going forward, Vol 3. may not have been the final entry in the Guardians of the Galaxy story.
Chris Pratt has publically stated that he would like to continue to portray Peter Quill, and Gunn chose to end Vol 3. with a new-look of the Guardians setting out on an adventure.
Perhaps we will see a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 after all.
