Robert Downey Jr. Explains the “Indie” Approach to Making ‘Iron Man’
As hard as it is to fathom now, there was a time when characters like Iron Man and Thor were considered second-rate.
Long before Robert Downey Jr. ushered in the era of the superhero with his performance in 2008’s Iron Man, Marvel had little use for many of its less popular characters.
Expectations for ‘Iron Man’ Were Low
According to Robert Downey Jr., it was this apathy that allowed Iron Man to be created in the first place.
“There was no real certainty that this was even going to take off,” the actor explained. “Iron Man was a second-tier hero.”
Because expectations were low for an Iron Man film, Marvel allowed Downey, Favreau, and the team to have free reign.
“They [Marvel] let the lunatics run the asylum for a little while, so it was completely an indie approach to a genre movie to begin with,” Downey continued.
Marvel Should Remember It’s Humble Beginnings
In the end, that “indie approach” would change the course of cinema. While Marvel films are now known for their grandiose scale and astronomical budget, the studio would be wise to look at its humble beginnings.
As films like The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania struggle at the box office, the MCU has become increasingly scrutinized for its bloated plots and overreliance on CGI. Interestingly, the answer to the studio’s problems may lie in its.
Perhaps if Marvel stripped things back and took a more indie approach, the studio can fend off superhero fatigue.
