Marvel Executive Brad Winderbaum Explains Marvel’s New Streaming Strategy
When WandaVision debuted on Disney+ in 2021, the series ushered in a new era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
While fans were thrilled to be able to watch new Marvel content from the comfort of their own home, it soon became apparent that many people were having trouble keeping up with the breakneck speed at which the studio released new shows and movies.
In fact, it was not only fans who struggled to keep up with Marvel’s output but the studio themselves.
Marvel Steaming Needed to Change
As Marvel Studios continued to spread itself dangerously thin, the quality of their product began to diminish. Eventually, something needed to change.
With Disney CEO Bob Iger and Marvel itself admitting that they may have oversaturated the market, the studio has begun to slow things down.
As part of an overhaul in how they make television, Marvel is not only leaning into traditional roles like showrunner, but it also plans to start telling more anthologized stories.
Marvel’s Streaming Series Had Been Made Like Films
According to producer Brad Winderbaum, Marvel initially approached their streaming series like they were films.
“We’ve learned a lot. We produced a lot of content very quickly, and we’re primarily a filmmaking company. So, you can see that our first round of shows have a very movie-like structure: they arc-out the characters by the end; they feel like a standalone limited series.”
Going forward, however, Marvel is changing gears. The studio will now look to make more traditional television shows. By doing so, they hope to not only create better content but also differentiate their films and streaming series.
“Moving forward, our content is going to feel a lot more like television,” Winderbaum explained. “It kind of drives toward the horizon; drives towards the future, and keeps people engaged for longer periods of time, in the more leaned-back setting of your living room. To set it apart, frankly, from the big, cinematic event experiences in the movie theater.”
Enter ‘Echo’
The first arrival in this new era of Marvel streaming will be Echo, which was released under the newly created Marvel Spotlight banner.
The new designation will indicate to viewers that the series will focus on more “street-level” characters. Additionally, fans will be able to enjoy the show without having to keep up with the rest of the MCU.
Echo is streaming now on Disney+.
