These “cruising ducks” are hidden all around the cruise ships and fans go searching and collect them. Think of it as a scavenger hunt for rubber ducks.
Disney Cruise Line (DCL) has just announced that the scavenger hunts are being discouraged. Note that the company is not prohibiting the practice- just discouraging it.

A DCL spokesperson shared:
According to our policy, guests are allowed to bring rubber ducks onboard. However, it’s important to note that pool toys, including rubber ducks, are not permitted to be used in the pools.
Additionally, we kindly request that guests are not allowed to hide items such as rubber ducks in public areas or staterooms.”
No further details are available at this time.

You don’t have to sail away with Disney Cruise Line to have heard of this- as the phenomenon has popped up on multiple cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Carnival.
The scavenger hunts actually started on a Carnival Cruise ship six years ago, and it has since spread to almost all cruise lines.
However, DCL is the first cruise line releasing an official statement concerning the practice.
