‘American Born Chinese’ Cancelled After One Season
Once again, Disney+ has decided to end an original series after just one season.
Following in the footsteps of fellow Disney+ series Big Shot, The Mysterious Benedict Society, National Treasure: Edge of History, and Willow, American Born Chinese has been canceled after just one season.
The decision to cancel the show came more than seven months after the first season was released, and according to Deadline, it came as the options on the cast expired.
A Critical Darling With Low Ratings
American Born Chinese was created by Kelvin Yu and based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel. While the series was a hit with critics (it currently holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), it struggled to find an audience.
Unlike other fellow Disney Branded Television series Goosebumps and The Santa Clauses, the show never managed to crack the weekly Nielsen Top 10 streaming rankings.
American Born Chinese followed Jin Wang (Ben Wang), who is an average high schooler, until he meets a new student on his first day of the school year and becomes entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.
The main cast also included Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michele Yeoh, alongside Christine Wang, Chin Han, Jimmy Liu and Daniel Wu.
The Show Is Being Shopped Elsewhere
Although Disney+ will not be continuing the series, according to Deadline, 20th Television plans to shop the show elsewhere.
As things currently stand, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series remains the only Disney Branded Teleivion series to make it to a third season.
