‘Thunderbolts’ Will Explore the Relationship Between Red Guardian and Yelena Belova
When Marvel Studio’s Thunderbolts finally hits theaters in 2025, audiences will be introduced to a new kind of Avengers- a team comprised of anti-heroes and former villains.
Under the purview of Thunderbolt Ross, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine will assemble a new squad comprised of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell).
While many of the film’s characters will be meeting for the first time, others have complicated histories together.
The History Between Yelena and Alexei
In fact, in the entirety of the MCU, there may not be two people with a more complex past than Yelena Belova and Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian.
As those who saw Black Widow know, Yelena Belova and Red Guardian spent time together in America living the life of a seemingly normal family.
While in reality, the duo were both Russian spies, the lines between make-believe and reality were blurred for the young Yelna, who was just a child at the time.
According to David Harbour who portrays Axelei/Red Guardian in the MCU, Thunderbolts will dive back into the time that his character and Yelena spent in America.
“So they have a lot of unexplored history. There’s a lot of details that the director, Jake, has gone into the great care of what their life was like in the Midwest when they were doing all that spy stuff. And then, a lot of that comes up in really fun, interesting, beautiful ways, which, like in the Black Widow movie came up with that song, American Pie. And there’s just a lot of complexity between me and Florence’s character, which I love.”
More Than Just an Action Movie
In the end, Thunderbolts will be more than just another action movie, it will explore the emotional relationships that drive many of its characters. In regards to Alexei and Yelena, Harbour explains:
“And also they’re two people that… she can’t stand, but she needs some because she’s incomplete in a certain way that he may be able to help her with. I think that’s always so beautiful. Because I feel like our relationships are always so… Sometimes we don’t get to choose the people that complete us. The people that we really need. I think that they exemplify that in their own way. It will be fun to bring that to life in the movie.”
After a series of delays, Thunderbolts is set to hit theaters on July 25th, 2025.
