Taiki Waititi Says Chris Hemsworth is in Discussions For ‘Thor 5’
One of the biggest questions looming over the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is whether the story of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor will continue.
The God of the Thunder is of course an original Avenger, who has starred in four movies of his own.
While the first two Thor movies were almost Shakespearean in their nature, Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder went in a markedly different direction under the watchful eye of Taika Waititi.
Waititi was lauded for his more comedic take on Thor for Ragnarok, although many Marvel fans felt that Love and Thunder was too silly and lighthearted. Though the later film was still a box office success, it did not receive the same kind of critical acclaim that Ragnarok did.
Waititi Will Not Direct ‘Thor 5’
While Marvel has yet to announce that a Thor 5 is in the works, if the movie is made, Waititi will not be a part of it.
“I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for… So that’s six, seven years gone. I’d imagine another Thor would be a lot sooner than that. But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris [Hemsworth],” Waititi explains.
Still, according to Waititi, Hemsworth and Marvel are in talks about making a fifth Thor movie. If the movie should move forward without the director, he has no hard feelings.
“I would never feel like they are cheating on me… We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day,” Waititi said.
Thor Needs a Change
While Waititi managed to find the perfect mixture of humor and heart in Thor: Ragnarok, by Love and Thunder his schtick had grown tiresome.
The film’s lighthearted tone distracted from the emotional story being told and made Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher an afterthought.
Even Hemsworth admitted that Love and Thunder was too silly and that Thor 5 would be well served by being more “unpredictable”.
“I’ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I don’t have the answer yet, but I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again. And keep it a little unpredictable,” he said.
For now, Thor 5 remains hypothetical. If the franchise should continue, however, it will be well served by doing so with a new director.
