ESPN Lays Out Ground Rules For Talent Ahead of ESPN BET Launch
With ESPN BET set to launch today, the Worldwide Leader in Sports will soon be entering the sports gambling sphere.
Having their own gambling app will be a big change for the network’s journalists, who have long worked hard to appear above the fray when it comes to sports betting.
New Rules For ESPN Employees
Ahead of the new app launch, ESPN has been working hard to determine which of their 5,000 employees can use ESPN BET.
According to the new company guidelines any ESPN talent who are designated as “Insiders” or “Reporters” will be prohibited from placing, soliciting, or facilitating bets on leagues that they cover.
ESPN is reportedly especially concerned that confidential information they gather will be used for betting purposes.
In addition to not being able to use the apps, ESPN will keep insiders like Adam Schefter and Adrian Wojnarowski off gambling shows like “ESPN BET Live.”
The Rules Apply To Everyone
All ESPN employees will also be banned from betting on any games they’re specifically assigned to cover. That rule also applies to production personnel and journalists who are working off-site.
ESPN is reportedly also banning executives who manage business relationships with leagues from betting on those leagues.
Finally, ESPN is banning its employees from wagering on awards or draft props.
The guidelines were developed in conjunction with The Walt Disney Company’s standards of business conduct.
ESPN BET will launch today at 4:00 p.m. ET. When it does, ESPN will officially enter a whole new world. How Disney and ESPN manage to maintain their image and integrity while advertising gambling will be interesting to see.
