‘The Marvels’ Is Heading For the Worst Opening Weekend in MCU History
The latest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Marvels, opened in theaters this weekend to disastrous results.
The film is currently tracking towards a $47 million opening, which would be the lowest opening in the history of the MCU.

The film only managed to bring in $21.5 million on Friday, setting the stage for an opening weekend that will fail to reach even the most tempered of expectations.

Adding to Marvel’s headaches, The Marvels received a CinemaScore of “B”, meaning that even the Marvel die-hards who saw the film gave it a lukewarm rating.
What Went Wrong?
When the dust settles, there will be plenty of ink spilled on the death of Marvel Studios and “superhero fatigue”. Still, there is reason to think that The Marvels will be an anomaly and not an indication that Marvel’s box office reign is over.

For starters, the film was clearly hindered by the SAG-AFTRA strike. With The Marvels stars unable to promote the upcoming film, the movie’s star-studded cast was largely wasted.
The Marvels not only saw the return of Brie Larson as Captain America, but it also featured Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton, Teyonah Parris, and the always-electric Iman Vellani. With so many personalities, The Marvels was disproportionately hurt by the strike.
While Disney chose not to delay the release of The Marvels for a fifth time, they also did little to promote the film. Perhaps the most indicative sign of the studio’s apathy to the film, was that The Marvels had no presence at San Diego Comic-Con.
Did Disney Give Up?
Similar to how the studio treated last year’s Strange World, it appears as if Disney was willing to cut their losses and let the chips fall where they may.
If “superhero fatigue” has indeed set in, the actor’s strike may be a blessing in disguise for Marvel. Next year, the studio only has Deadpool 3 on the docket.

Marvel can now put The Marvels in the rear-view window and focus on its future. Still, one thing is clear, the days of Marvel Studios indiscriminately laying golden eggs may be over.
