PHOTOS: The Main Street Cinema Gets New Carpet
One of my favorite places in all of Disney World has always been the Main Street Cinema at Magic Kingdom.
While today the location serves primarily as a shop, once upon a time the cinema was a full-fledged attraction.
Requiring a “B” ticket to enter, the Main Street Cinema showed classic Mickey Mouse cartoons on multiple screens. Inside the theater, weary visitors could relax and enjoy Steamboat Willie or Mickey’s Polo Team.
In 1994, the cinema showed Mickey’s Big Break, which had originally debuted at the Disney MGM Studios in 1991.
Becoming a Retail Location
Alas, as with most of Main Street in the 1990s, the Main Street Cinema was transformed into a store. Outside of a brief transformation into the headquarters for the online Virtual Magic Kingdom game (remember that?!), the cinema has remained a retail location.
Still, in a tribute to both its theming and its past, one lone screen remains, often playing Disney cartoons or videos from the Disney Parks.
Even after all the changes, with its Victorian architecture and beautiful interior, the Main Street Cinema has remained one of my favorite places to stop by and visit.
The Main Steet Cinema Gets an Upgrade
Well, if you are a Main Street Cinema fan like me, then I have great news!
No, the location is not being turned back into a movie theater, but, the cinema has gotten new carpet, and it looks great!
The new red Persian carpet fits perfectly with the cinema’s theme. For comparison, here is a look at the old carpet.
I love the stylized pattern on the new carpet, it really makes the whole location come alive again.
The carpet also does a good job of differentiating the Main Street Cinema from Uptown Jewelers. Because of the interconnected nature of the two shopping locations, they can sometimes run together.
Here is a final look at the new carpet. Good job Disney!
Hopefully, the new carpet is a sign that the Main Street Cinema will continue to be around for years. Now, if only we could get the rest of the movie screens re-installed.
