A Journey Aboard the Liberty Square Riverboat
Situated in the heart of Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World is a timeless and iconic attraction.
The Liberty Square Riverboat, affectionately known as the Liberty Belle, is a classic steam-powered paddle-wheel riverboat.
This attraction offers a unique and nostalgic experience along the scenic waters of the Rivers of America. It invites guests to embark on a leisurely voyage through America’s storied past.
A Historic Debut
The story of the Liberty Belle begins with its predecessor, the Admiral Joe Fowler. It was named in honor of Disneyland’s construction, Joe Fowler, supervisor who was a former rear admiral of the United States Navy.
On October 2, 1971, just one day after the official opening of the Magic Kingdom, the Admiral Joe Fowler made its debut.
Two years later, in 1973, the Richard F. Irvine, named after the Disney executive responsible for overseeing the planning and design of Walt Disney World, also joined the fleet.
These two vessels operated in tandem until 1980, with a unique distinction: the Admiral Joe Fowler boasted two smokestacks, while the Richard F. Irvine had just one.
Renaming and Transformation
In 1996, a significant transformation took place. The Richard F. Irvine underwent a complete overhaul and emerged with a new identity as The Liberty Belle.
Since then, it has continued to gracefully navigate the Rivers of America, offering guests an opportunity to relive the charm of a bygone era.
Notably, two of the three ferry boats transporting guests from the Transportation and Ticket Center to the Magic Kingdom now bear the names Admiral Joe Fowler and Richard F. Irvine.
Changing Scenery
Over the years the scenery along the Rivers of America has evolved. In 1973, Tom Sawyer Island made its debut.
It was followed by the thrilling addition of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in 1980. These enhancements have enriched the attraction and added even more appeal to this classic ride.
Aboard the Liberty Belle
The Liberty Belle Riverboat features four levels, each offering limited seating but plenty of space to stand, allowing guests to enjoy unobstructed views of the surroundings.
Throughout the journey, a horn and bell system occasionally punctuates the experience with its distinctive sounds.
An actor portraying the legendary Mark Twain narrates most of the journey, sharing insights about the river and pointing out significant landmarks along the way.
During your cruise, you’ll be treated to scenic sights such as Tom Sawyer Island, a Native American village, and woodland animals.
The Liberty Belle also provides unique perspectives of nearby attractions, including The Haunted Mansion, and the majestic Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
For photographers and die-hard park enthusiasts, these vantage points are a must-see.
Despite its size, the Liberty Belle exudes stability as it gracefully glides through the water at a leisurely pace.
Guests are free to explore the boat’s various levels during the 17-minute journey, making it an ideal attraction for families with young children.
