Henry Selick Ponders a ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Prequel
As hard as it may be to believe, it has been 30 years since Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas was released.
Over the past three decades, Jack, Sally, Zero and Oogie Boogie have remained at the forefront of popular culture, and if anything their popularity has continued to grow.
Despite this, a second Nightmare Before Christmas film has never been released. If Nightmare director Henry Selick gets his way, however, that could change.
A ‘Nightmare’ Prequel?
In an interview with People, Selick ruminated on the idea of a Nightmare Before Christmas prequel, where audiances learn more about Jack Skellington’s past.
“There might be a more interesting story there about how Jack became the King of Halloween Town,” he mused.
Tim Burton Would Have to Approve
Still, the final decision on a Nightmare Before Christmas prequel would be made by Tim Burton, and according to Selick, the filmmaker hasn’t been interested in revisiting the IP.
“I think Tim [Burton] in particular feels like, why mess with that? He certainly doesn’t need to make more money from a sequel. He has had so many other successes, and so far nobody’s come up with a great idea for a sequel. And I still think that Tim gets to decide. I don’t think there’s any idea that would convince him,”” he revealed.
While it doesn’t sound like a Nightmare Before Christmas prequel is on the horizon, perhaps one day Burton will be more open to returning to the franchise.
Until then, fans will have to make do with the original masterpiece.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is currently streaming on Disney+.
