BREAKING: Disney Unveils Next Generation Robot Prototype at SXSW
During their presentation at SXSW today, Disney Imagineers showcased their next generation of Animatronic robots.
As Imagineers talked about the amazing work that they do, a robot unexpectedly climbed out of a wooden crate wearing roller skates.

Judy Steals the Show
After plopping onto the floor, the robot, which was clearly designed to look like Judy Hopps from Zootopia, then went on to steal the show.

The “brand new prototype robot” took the stage alongside Josh D’Amaro and Imagineers to perform a stunt where she fell down, got back up, and did a somersault.
Not only is this new type of prototype robot able to perform, but the character was also designed to establish an emotional connection with guests while attempting her stunt. Here is a video.

According to Disney, the dynamic robot “incorporates motion-capture data to create performances that evoke emotion, giving Disney Imagineers a new way to bring out a characters’ personality.”
Based on the crowd reaction, I would say Imagineers did a great job!

While this technology is likely a long way away from debuting in the parks, the possibilities are endless.
The Future of Disney Characters?
Could free-moving robotic Disney characters perform and meet with guests in the future?
Needless to say, this is the kind of technology, and Disney magic, that could radically change the parks.
I for one can’t wait to see how these next-generation robots progress. Coming up with new ways for guests to interact with their favorite characters, would also fit into Bob Iger’s mandate to “mine” more IPs in the park.
