Early Box Office Tracking Shows ‘The Marvels’ May Be in Trouble
While we are still roughly a month away from The Marvels’ box-office debut, long-range box-office estimates are showing that Marvel’s latest blockbuster may be in trouble.
According to Box Office Pro, the Captain Marvel sequel is heading towards a domestic opening weekend in the $50-75 million range.
That number would be at least a 50% drop-off from the $153.4 million opening that Captain Marvel delivered in its first weekend in 2019.
Additionally, The Marvels’ ticket presales are tracking 72% lower than Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Hurt By the SAG-AFTRA Strike
While The Marvels still has time to build momentum going into its opening, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike will be a real problem for marketing.
The Marvels boasts a star-studded cast that includes Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris.
So far, the task of drumming up promotion for the film has fallen squarely on director Nia DaCosta, who admittedly is not who people come to see.
“I’m hoping I’m not promoting the movie by myself,” DaCosta said. “No one’s there to see me, either. They’re going to be like, ‘Where’s Brie Larson?’”
Hope For ‘The Marvels’
The good news for The Marvels is that due to to delay of Dune: Part II, there will be a limited amount of competition for the film. The Dune delay also has given The Marvels access to Imax theaters.
With a dearth of films set to be released in early November, The Marvels will also have limited competition.
With four weeks to go, The Marvels has its work cut out for him. If the film can’t improve on its long-range projections, which are admittedly usually conservative, the talk of superhero fatigue and the end of Marvel’s dominance will be louder than ever.
The Marvels will hit theaters on November 10.
