Restored ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Is Coming to Disney+ Soon
As part of the Disney100 celebration, The Walt Disney Company is taking the time to pour over its illustrious history and celebrate the stories and characters that entertained audiances for generations.
In the 100-year history of Disney, there is not a more important film than Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
The first feature-length animated movie not only gave The Walt Disney Company the financial flexibility to continue on, but it also laid the foundation for the type of stories and characters that Disney would become world-renowned for. If you don’t believe me, look at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, the Seven Dwarfs are literally the pillars holding up the company.
In spite of Rachel Zegler’s disdain for the film, nearly 85 years after the film’s release, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs continues to shine as both an artistic achievement and a delightful story.
Well, if you are a Snow White fan, or just a fan of Disney history, then I have great news!
Restoring Disney History
On October 16th a new 4K digital restoration of Snow White and Seven Dwarfs will be available on Disney+.
According to Disney, the restored version “is the result of the combined efforts of the Walt Disney Studios Restoration and Preservation team, working closely with key artists from Walt Disney Animation Studios.”
Led by Disney Animation artists Michael Giaimo and Eric Goldberg the restoration team is the same unit that recently restored Cinderella.
“The opportunity to help restore Snow White was both an honor and a challenge,” Goldberg said in a statement. “As the very first Walt Disney feature, Mike Giaimo and I felt we owed a debt to history to get it looking as beautiful, and as accurate to the original colors, as we could. The muted palette and the delicate watercolor backgrounds evoke the illustrated fairy tales that Walt so loved, and the story and characters continue to resonate to this day. I hope our work inspires future generations of animation artists to fully appreciate the masterful talent and care that has gone into this landmark film.”
A Seminal Film
Not only is Snow White important to the annals of Disney history, but it is also a seminal film in the history of motion pictures. The film was the first full-length cel animated feature film and was recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences with an honorary Oscar.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was also inducted into the National Film Registry in 1989, the registry’s inaugural year.
“We are incredibly excited to go back to Walt’s original negative and use current state-of-the-art technology to restore this stunning classic to its original beauty,” said Kevin Schaeffer, director of Restoration for Walt Disney Studios.
How to Watch
While the restored Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will stream on Disney+ on October 16, fans who prefer to have physical copies of media will be able to purchase the film on Blu-ray beginning October 10.

The Rachel Zegler comment is unnecessary and misleading. She said it scared her as a kid. The ride used to be called Snow White’s Scary Adventure. It is scary.
She also said it’s not the 30s anymore and Snow White is gonna have more to her than just waiting for a prince to come. That’s totally fair. We expect more complex characters than audiences did literally 100 years ago, and that’s a good thing. That doesn’t mean she “disdains” the original, that just means movies are different now and we expect more complexity from a character than just wanting to be in love — she didn’t say being in love or wanting love is bad, just its not a woman’s sole reason for existence anymore, and that’s a good thing.
We’ve seen Snow White and the Huntsman and Maleficent with big changes and nobody cared until a latin american woman was part of it. Blogs like yours should be about sharing the move of these stories, not about piling on people in culture wars. This isn’t Inside The Magic. You’re better than that.
