‘Loki’ Producer Says They Did Not Consider Replacing Jonathan Majors
The premiere of Loki Season 2 is shrouded in controversy, as it will be the first Marvel appearance by Jonathan Majors since his arrest for domestic violence last March.
Majors originated the role of He Who Remains (a variant of Kang) in Loki Season 1, before being formally introduced as Kang the Concourer in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Since his arrest, Majors has been dropped by his management and PR companies, and removed from the upcoming film The Man in My Basement and the United States Army ads.
Marvel Has Held Firm
Marvel, however, has silently stood by the star, choosing to wait for the legal proceedings to play out before acting.
The studio was likely hoping that Majors’ trial would be underway by this point, if not completed. The actor’s legal proceedings have gone through numerous delays, with the trial now expected to start on October 25.
‘Loki’ Producers Never Considered Removing Majors
With the second season of Loki ready to hit Disney+ on Thursday, the studio is out of time. According to Loki executive producer Kevin Wright, however, the idea of replacing Majors was not considered.
“No. And that mainly came from – I know as much as you do at the moment. It felt hasty to do anything without knowing how all of this plays out,” he explains.
Perhaps more interestingly, Marvel also did not try to downplay the importance of Majors to Loki‘s plot.
“This is maybe the only show or movie in the history of Marvel that had zero additional photography. So Victor Timely, that character, that story, was something we had been wanting to tell for a while and we were excited to tell it this season when we went to shoot it, we shot it and it’s all there onscreen. But that’s the story we wanted to tell. And that’s what’s onscreen,” he said.
For now, Marvel will let Majors’ trial play out before acting. With the rescheduled hearings now set to take place during the release of Loki Season 2, however, the day of reckoning for the studio may soon come.
Loki Season 2 will debut on Disney+ on October 5.
