Guillermo Del Toro Was Secretly Working on a ‘Star Wars’ Film
When Lucasfilm announced that three new Star Wars films would be coming to theaters at Star Wars Celebration 2023, it ended years of rumors and speculation about where the universe would be heading next.
Following the release of The Rise of Skywalker, various directors and screenwriters were attached to future Star Wars projects.
Among the Hollywood luminaries tied to a galaxy far, far away were Rian Johnson, Kevin Feige, Damon Lindeloff, and Patty Jenkins’ who was working on a one-off adventure titled Rouge Squadron.
While all of these possible Star Wars projects were reported on, and in some cases announced, it turns out that there was a major Hollywood director quietly working on his own Star Wars story.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Cancelled Star Wars Project
On the Happy Sad and Confused hosted by Josh Horowitz screenwriter David S. Goyer revealed that Guillermo del Toro was planning on joining the Star Wars universe “around four years ago.”
According to Goyer, he “wrote an unproduced Star Wars movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct.”
When asked why the project never took off, the screenwriter explained, “There was just a lot of behind[-the-scenes] stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time, but it’s a cool script … There’s a lot of cool artwork from it that was produced.”
Del Toro quickly confirmed Goyer’s story posting on X, “True. Can’t say much. Maybe two letters “J” and “BB” is that three letters?”

While “BB’ is likely a reference to BB-8, “J” is more mysterious. Perhaps he was referring to Jabba the Hutt?
Goyer’s Ideas Have Lived On
In the end, it doesn’t sound like Guillermo Del Toro will be tackling Star Wars anytime soon. Goyer also revealed, however, that he wrote a script for an “Origins of the Jedi movie.” That film would have been set 25,000 years before the events of Phantom Menace.
While that project has likewise gone unproduced, it seems that the idea of the project has lived on in the form of James Mangold’s upcoming “Dawn of the Jedi” movie.
Goyer, however, is still disappointed to not be joining the iconic franchise. “Dabbling [further] in Star Wars would’ve been fun,” he said.
