Two Future ‘Star Wars’ Projects Have Been Reportedly Shelved
While the Star Wars universe has expanded in amazing ways through the storytelling of streaming shows like The Mandalorian and Andor, it has been almost four years since a Star Wars feature film landed in theaters.
Following the disappointing results of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm has reportedly been in talks with a myriad of directors about helming the next Star Wars blockbuster.
Despite a lot of talk and rumors, no feature film announcement has been put forward. While many insiders expect this to change at the Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 next month, Variety is reporting that at least two of the rumored projects are now dead.
“Rouge Squadron” Shelved
In 2020, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy announced that Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins would helm the next Star Wars movie.
The one-off adventure was titled “Rogue Squadron” and was initially scheduled to be released in December 2023.
In September 2022, however, the film was pulled from the schedule. Now, insiders say that the film is no longer in development.
Kevin Feige Project Cancelled
Another rumored Star Wars project was reportedly being developed by Marvel head Kevin Feige.
Initially reported in 2019, the movie remained alive until at least as recently as May 2022. At that time, screenwriter Michael Waldron stated that he had started working on a Star Wars screenplay for Feige.
Five months later, Feige hired Waldron to write Avengers: Secret Wars. Now, it appears as if both Feige and Waldron will be tied up with Marvel for the foreseeable future. Variety is now reporting that this project is also dead.
Taika Waititi or Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Could Be Next
With Feige and Jenkins now out of the picture, it appears as if Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi may be the lead runner to develop the next Star Wars film.
With Disney needing a film to fill its December 2025 slot, sources say that the famed director is still plowing ahead with his Star Wars feature film.
Another possibility would be director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The Oscar-winning documentarian reportedly has a commitment from Lucasfilm to produce a Star Wars feature film.
While the future of Star Wars still seems murky, we should have more clarity next month. Until then, Star Wars fans will have to make do with The Mandalorian Season 3.
