Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of The Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- September 8.
September 8th was a slower day in Dinsey history, but it still featured a milestone for Disneyland, the loss of a Disney Legend, and the end of a popular Disney animated series. So, let’s get started!
Disneyland Greets Its One-Millionth Guest (1955)
On this day in 1955, four-year-old Elsa Marquez became the one-millionth guest to enter Disneyland.
Disneyland managed to reach the milestone just 7 weeks after the park’s grand opening.
Sing Me a Story with Belle Premieres (1995)
On this day in 1995, Sing Me a Story with Belle premiered on Disney Channel.
The series featured Belle, who owns and manages a bookshop, interacts with children and narrates classic Disney animated shorts.
Disneyland’s Submarine Voyage Closes (1998)
On this day in 1998, Disneyland’s Submarine Voyage attraction closed.
On hand for the festivities was U.S. Navy Commander Robert Thomas. The attraction had originally opened in June 1959.
The Other Me Premieres (2000)
On this day in 2000, the Disney Channel Original Movie The Other Me premiered.
The film starred Andrew Lawerence as Will Browning.
Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort Closes For Renovations (2002)
On this day in 2002, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort closed for renovations.
During the closure, Old Port Royale, the resort’s hub, was redone.
Frank Thomas Passes Away (2004)
On this day in 2004, Disney Legend Frank Thomas passed away at the age of 92.
One of Walt’s “Nine Old Men”, Thomas spent 43 years at Disney working on films including Bambi, Landy and the Tramp, and the Sword in the Stone.
The Replacements Debuts (2006)
On this day in 2006, The Replacements debuted on The Disney Channel.
The new animated series told the story of two orphans who are given access to a super foster agency that enables them to replace people in their life with aces and superhumans.
Club Mickey Mouse Debuts (2017)
On this day in 2017, Club Mickey Mouse debuted.
The new version of The Mickey Mouse Club was made available on Facebook and Instagram rather than a half-hour television program.
Sofia the First Ends (2018)
On this day in 2018, Sofia the First ended.
The series originally debuted in 2013 and followed the adventures of a young peasant girl named Sofia, who becomes a princess after her mother marries the kind of Enchancia.
