‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’ Writer Says Script Was So “Weird” He Didn’t Think Disney Would Buy It
While any future involvement of Johnny Depp remains unclear, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is still sailing toward a 6th film.
In 2020, it was reported that Disney was in early development on two separate Pirate movies. One would have been a reboot led by Margot Robot, while the other film would be a sixth installment in the original franchise written by Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, the duo behind the franchise’s first four films.
Subsequently, last November, Robbie told Vanity Fair that her Pirates movie had been canceled.
“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool. But I guess they don’t want to do it,” she said.
‘Pirates 6’ Script Is “Weird” But “Fantastic”
Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer then clarified that Robbie’s film was not completely dead, but that Disney was instead prioritizing Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
According to Mazin, progress on the development of the next Pirates of the Caribbean film was stalled by the WGA strike. With that being said, Mazin is promising that the script while “weird” is “fantastic.”
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird,” Mazin said. “And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
Will Johnny Depp Return?
While a continuation of the Pirates franchise looks like a certainty, the same can not be said for Depp’s possible involvement in a 6th film.
Following domestic abuse allegations by his wife Amber Heard, Depp was dropped by Disney and became persona non grata in Hollywood.
Depp was vindicated when a jury ruled that Heard had defamed the actor, however, and a return of Captain Jack Sparrow no longer seems like an impossibility.
With that being said, Depp publically stated during the defamation trial that he was hurt by Disney’s action, and would not work with the studio again.
As they say, however, time heals all wounds. With Depp seemingly poised to mount a comeback and Pirates of the Caribbean 6 in production, Captain Jack Sparrow may once again set sail.
