August 22nd was a slower day in Disney history, but it was a big day for animation with the release of the final Alice Comedy, the first Silly Symphony, and a Donald Duck cartoon. So, let’s get going!
Alice in the Big Leagues Released (1927)
On this day in 1927, Alice in the Big Leagues is released.
The short was the final short in the Alice Comedy series and featured Alice’s attempts to umpire a big league baseball game.
The Skeleton Dance Released (1929)
On this day in 1929, the Silly Symphony The Skeleton Dance was released.
Directed by Ub Iwerks, the short was the very first Silly Symphony series.
Toby Tortoise Returns Released (1936)
On this day in 1936, the Silly Symphony cartoon Toby Tortoise Returns was released.
The short was a sequel to the 1935 cartoon The Tortoise and the Hare.
Bootle Beetle Released (1947)
On this day in 1947, the Donald Duck cartoon Bootle Beetle was released.
In the cartoon, a young beetle attempts to run away from home, but is stopped by a lesson about the dreaded bug collector played by Donald Duck!
The Carefree Corner Opens (1956)
On this day in 1956, The Carefree Corner opened in Disneyland.
The little shop at the end of Main Street had guestbooks for each U.S. state.
G.I. Jane Released (1997)
On this day in 1997, G.I. Jane was released.
The film, which starred Demi Moore, told the fictional story of the first woman to undergo training in U.S. Navy Special Warfare Group.
The Cheetah Girls: One World Debuts (2008)
Finally, on this day in 2008, the Disney Channel original movie The Cheetah Girls: One World debuted.
The third installment in the franchise, the film was watched by 6.2 million total viewers.
