This Day in Disney History- August 12
Welcome back to our magical foray through the history of The Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- August 12.
August 12th was a slower day in Disney history, but it featured a major moment in company history, the debut of a new animated series, and the opening of a new Walt Disney World experience. So, let’s get started!
Walt Disney Trademarks Mickey Mouse (1929)
On this day in 1929, Walt Disney was granted a trademark for the use of the image of Mickey Mouse in motion pictures.
The trademark would be extended from 1998 to last until 2024.
White Wilderness Released (1958)
On this day in 1958, Disney’s True-Life Adventure White Wilderness was released.
The film told the story of the animal inhabitants of Alaska’s arctic wilds.
Disney Airs The Apollo 11 Moon Landing (1969)
On this day in 1969, Disneyland re-aired the historic Apollo 11 moon landing.
Although the landing had taken place the month before, crowds still gathered to watch the landing on the Tomorrowland Stage.
The Disney Magic Embarks On A New Cruise (2000)
On this day in 2000, the Disney Magic embarked on its first seven-day cruise.
The luxury liner had previously only offered three and four-day cruises.
Sealife Evacuated to The Living Seas
On this day in 2004, manatees, dolphins, and turtles were evacuated from Mote Marine in Sarasota to EPCOT’s The Living Seas.
The move was made in preparation for Hurricane Charley which was heading towards Central Florida.
Pete’s Dragon Released (2016)
On this day in 2016, Disney’s Pete’s Dragon remake was released to theaters.
A remake of the 1977 film, the film starred Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Karl Urban.
DuckTales Premieres (2017)
On this day in 2017, DuckTales premiered as a sneak preview on Disney XD.
The series was a reboot of the original 1987 series of the same name. The show saw the return of Scrooge McDuck and his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie.
NBA Experience Opens (2019)
On this day in 2019, NBA Experience officially opened at Disney Springs.
The new interactive experience featured 13 different interactive elements and hands-on activities. The new NBA Experience was attended by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Grant Hill, and Rachel Nichols.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Ends (2020)
Finally, on this day in 2020, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired its series finale with two episodes “The End is at Hand” and “What We’re Fighting For”.
The show originally aired in 2013 and ran for 136 episodes.
