This Day in Disney History- January 12
Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- January 12!
January 12th featured the closure of a Walt Disney World staple, the loss of a Disney Legend, and the groundbreaking for a new Disney Park. So let’s get into it!

Star Tours Cast Premiere is Held (1987)
On this day in 1987, Disneyland held a Cast Premiere for the park’s newest attraction- Star Tours.

The Cast-only event was held from 7pm until midnight.
International Gateway Opens (1990)
On this day in 1990, International Gateway opened at EPCOT Center.

Located between the United Kingdom and France pavilions in World Showcase, the park’s second entrance allows access for the EPCOT resort area hotels.
Eventually, International Gateway would become the Disney Skyliner’s EPCOT station.
Marc Davis Passes Away (2000)
On this day in 2000, Disney Legend Marc Davis passed away at age 86.

One of Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men, Davis helped design such iconic characters as Snow White, Bambi, Cinderella, Tinker Bell and Crurella de Ville. Eventually, Davis made the transition to Walt Disney Imagineering, where he helped create characters and scenes for The Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, The Country Bear Jamboree and more!
Downtown Disney Opens (2001)
On this day in 2001, Downtown Disney opened in the Disneyland Resort.
The new park restaurant, shopping, and and nightclub zone linked together Disney’s California Adventure, Disneyland and the resort’s three hotels.
Groundbreaking at Hong Kong Disneyland (2003)
On this day in 2003, a groundbreaking ceremony took place at Hong Kong Disneyland to mark the official start of the park’s construction.

The park would eventually open September 12, 2005.
Cory in the House (2007)
On this day in 2007, Cory in the House premiered on the Disney Channel.

A spinoff of That’s so Raven, Cory in the House featured Kyle Massey and Rondell Sheridan reprising their roles from the original show.
Cory in the House was the first Disney Channel spinoff.
Main Street Bakery Closes
On this day in 2013, the Main Street Bakery closed in the Magic Kingdom.
The bakery would eventually reopen as the park’s Starbucks location.
