Welcome back to our magical journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- August 7.
August 7 was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the loss of a Disney Legend, the release of a Bonkers D. Bobcat cartoon, and the premiere of a live-action sequel.
Astro Jets Renamed Tomorrowland Jets (1964)
On this day in 1964, Disneyland’s Astro Jets were renamed the “Tomorrowland Jets.”
The name change may have come about to appease United Airlines. The company had just assumed sponsorship of The Enchanted Tiki Room, and believed that the name Astro Jets was free advertising for American Airlines’ “Astrojet” coast-to-coast service.
The Haunted Mansion Opens To Disneyland Cast Members (1969)
On this day in 1969, the Haunted Mansion opened in Disneyland to cast members.
The attraction would open to the public two days later.
Condorman Released (1981)
On this day in 1981, Condorman was released in the United States.
The film starred Michael Crawford as a cartoonist who becomes the superhero he draws.
Wilfred Jackson Passes Away (1988)
On this day in 1988, Disney Legend Wilfred Jackson passed away.
Jackson started his career in 1928 as an unpaid helper at the Walt Disney Studios.
Eventually, Jackson would work on the early Mickey Mouse shorts, Snow White, Song of the South and Peter Pan. Jackson was named a Disney Legend in 1998.
Petal to the Metal Released (1992)
On this day in 1992, Disney’s Bonkers D. Bobcat cartoon Petal to the Metal was released.
The cartoon featured Bonkers attempting to deliver flowers, which turns into a series of catastrophes.
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement Premieres (2004)
On this day in 2004, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement had its world premiere.
The film saw Anne Hathaway reprise her role as Princess Mia, who learns that she is being primed for an arranged marriage to an English suitor.
Among those in attendance at the premiere were film stars Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway, executive producer Whitney Houston, and director Gary Marshall.
The Walt Disney Company Reports Record Earnings
On this day in 2012, The Walt Disney Company reported its largest quarterly earnings in its history.
During its fiscal third quarter, the company turned a profit of more than $1.8 billion.
Howard Debuts on Disney+
On this day in 2020, Howard debuted on Disney+.
The documentary told the story of Howard Ashman, the brilliant lyricist behind Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid.
