Season 2 of ‘Loki’ Had A $140 Million Pre-Production and Filming Budget
Disney has revealed that it spent $141.3 million on pre-production and filming of the second season of ‘Loki’. That number puts it well behind Secret Invasion, which spent $211.6, but ahead of Marvel big screen productions including Doctor Strange, Thor 2: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Following the disappointing results of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion, Marvel is looking to the God of Mischief to help turn things around.
Season 1 of Loki remains the most-watched Disney+ series, and anticipation has been high for Season 2.
The trailer for the upcoming season of the show recently broke the record as the most-watched Disney+ trailer ever.
The show stars Tom Hiddleston as the eponymous Asgardian. For Season 2, he will be joined by returning stars Owen Wilson, Jonathan Majors, and Sophia Di Martino as well as new arrival Ke Huy Quan.
A Tough Year For Marvel
2023 has been a tumultuous year for Marvel. After Quantumania failed to kick off the MCU’s Phase IV as the studio hoped, the studio’s president of physical and post-production, VFX, and animation production, Victoria Alonso, was abruptly fired.
Just days after her departure, Marvel was stunned when Jonathan Majors, whose character Kang was being built up as the next big Marvel villain, was arrested for domestic assault. Majors had steadfastly denied the charges, and will soon go to trial.
In May, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 brought fans back to theaters. The film also marked the end of James Gunn’s MCU journey, however, as the Guardians creator left to head DC Studios.
Then came Secret Invasion. Based on a popular comic book arc, and starring Samuel L. Jackson as the iconic Nicky Fury, expectations for the series were high.
The series was poorly received by fans and critics alike. The CGI-heavy final episode of Secret Invasion is the lowest-rated episode of any Marvel series on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 7% approval.
Shockingly, Secret Invasion cost an astounding $211.6 million to produce. The poor reception, not to mention weak ratings, will likely irk Disney CEO Bob Iger, who has been clear that Disney needs to spend less.
‘Loki’ Needs to Deliver
In February, Iger said that Disney needed to “reduce costs on everything that we make because, while we’re extremely proud of what’s on the screen, it’s gotten to a point where it’s extraordinarily expensive.”
If Loki can match its Season 1 ratings and get Marvel back on track, however, its large budget will be worth it. Now, all Disney can do is wait and see.
Loki Season 2 will hit Disney+ on October 6, 2023.
