July 31st was a big day in Disney history, with the opening of a Disneyland attraction, a major acquisition for Disney, and the premiere of a Disney Channel series.
The Karnival Kid Released (1929)
On this day in 1929, the Mickey Mouse short The Karnival Kid was released.
In the film, Mickey sells hot dogs at the fair and serenades Minnie.
Casey Jr. Circus Train Debuts (1955)
On this day in 1955, the Casey Jr. Circus Train debuted at Disneyland.
Located in the back of Fantasyland, the train was initially scheduled to open with the rest of the park, but wasn’t operating properly.
The Sunkist Citrus House Opens (1960)
On this day in 1960, the Sunkist Citrus House opened on Main Street.
The restaurant offered fresh-squeezed orange juice, lemonade, lemon meringue pies and orange cheesecake.
The Bears and I Released (1974)
On this day in 1974, Disney released The Bears and I.
The film, which featured the music of John Denver, told the story of a man who adopts three bear cubs.
The Whipping Boy Airs (1994)
On this day in 1994, The Disney Channel film The Whipping Boy aired.
Based on the children’s book by Sid Fleischman, the film told the story of spoiled Prince Horace and his ‘whipping boy’ Jemmy.
Disney Acquires ABC/Capital Cities (1995)
On this day in 1995, Disney announced that it was acquiring ABC/Capital Cities.
As a result of the $19 billion merger, DIsney acquired, ABC’s television network, key affiliates, ABC radio networks and more.
Bob Penfield Ends Disneyland Career (1997)
On this day in 1997, Bob Penfield, the last original Disneyland Cast Member put in his final day of work.
Penfield, who began working at Disneyland at the age of 19 in July 1955, would eventually be honored with a window on Main Street.
Disney’s Plans For Shanghai Announced (2005)
On this day in 2005, The Hong Kong Economic Times reported that DIsney planned to build a park in Shanghai.
Disney would eventually break ground on the Shanghai Disney Resort in April 2011.
Walt Disney World’s Eagle Pines Golf Course Closes (2007)
On this day in 2007, Walt DIsney World’s Eagle Pines Golf Course closed.
The course was closed to make way for
Bunk’d Premieres (2015)
On this day in 2015, Bunk’d a new sitcom premiered on the Disney Channel.
The show was a spinoff of the series Jessie, where Emma, Ravi, and Zuri Ross leave New York City for summer camp in Moose Rump, Maine.
Disney’s Descendants Airs (2015)
Also on this day in 2015, the Disney Channel Original Movie Disney’s Descendants aired.
The film told the story of modernized versions of the teenage children of various Disney villains.
Upside-Down Magic Premieres (2020)
On this day in 2020, the DIsney Channel Original Movie Upside-Down Magic premiered.
In the film a young teen discoverers that her and her best friend have magic powers.
Muppets Now Premieres (2020)
Also on this day in 2020, the Disney+ series Muppets Now premiered.
The improvised comedy show was directed by Kirk Thatcher.
Black is King Premieres (2020)
Finally, also on this day in 2020, Disney+ premiered Black is King.
The musical film was directed written, and executive produced by Beyonce.
