Woman Sings Along With Moana During Her Own Brain Surgery
Moana got one Disney fan through brain surgery. Literally. According to a recent piece on ABC 7 in Chicago, a New Jersey woman underwent surgery for a brain tumor. Because of the very sensitive nature of the surgery, her surgeon wanted to keep her awake and singing to make sure that the procedure wasn’t doing damage to the patient’s speech, and “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana was her song of choice.
You can check out the full story in the new segment shared below:
The patient, Krystina Vied, has a passion for singing and loves to do karaoke. So, Dr. Nitesh Patel, co-director of neurosurgical oncology at Hackensack Meridian Health thought that harnessing that passion might be a fantastic way to keep tabs on how the patient is fairing during surgery.
Dr. Patel explained that the singing allowed him to tell in real-time the effect that surgery was having on her brain. Vied teaches kids so Disney’s song was the perfect tune. Dr. Patel added that having Vied sing gave him a chance to test her rhythm, cadence, and pitch. Toward the end of her song, Dr. Patel noticed that when he started to know errors in her singing it was a way of notifying the surgeon that it would be too risky to remove any more tissue during the surgery to remove the brain tumor.
At the moment, the prognosis from Krystina Vied is good. Keep following along with us here at MickeyBlog and we will keep you posted on any further updates!
