Welcome back to our continuing journey through Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- July 21.
July 21st was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the debut of a Walt DIsney World System, the announcement about a Downtown Disney expansion, and the beginning of Disneyland! So, let’s get started!
The Pointer Released (1939)
On this day in 1939, the Mickey Mouse cartoon The Pointer was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey tries to teach Pluto how to be a quail hunter, but he may not be cut out for the job.
Pests of the West Released (1950)
On this day in 1950, the Pluto cartoon Pests of the West was released.
In the cartoon, Pluto guards guards a chicken house from a hungry coyote named Bent-Tail.
Construction Begins At Disneyland (1954)
On this day in 1954, construction began on Disneyland.
Amazingly, the park would open less than a year later!
Disney Announces Pleasure Island (1986)
On this day in 1986, Disney announced plans to construct Pleasure Island.
The announcement was made by Disney CEO Michael Eisner on the Empress Lilly at Downtown Disney.
Broiler Room Barbecue Opens (1992)
On this day in 1992, The Broiler Room Barbecue opened in Tokyo Disneyland.
The First Paper FASTPass issued at Walt Disney World (1999)
On this day in 1999 the first FASTPass ticket was given out at Walt Disney World.
The new virtual queuing system would eventually pave the way for FASTPass+ and Disney’s Genie+.
The Country Bears Premieres (2002)
On this day in 2002, The Country Bears premiered at the El Capitan Theatre.
The film told the story of a young bear who sets out to reunite his favorite band- the Country Bears. The film was based on the popular Walt Disney World attraction and starred Haley Joel Osment, Christopher Walken and John Hiatt.
Raging Spirits Opens (2005)
On this day in 2005, Raging Spirits opened at Tokyo DisneySea.
The roller coaster is located in the Lost River Delta section of the park.
Read It and Weep Airs (2006)
On this day in 2006, the Disney Channel Original Movie Read it and Weep premiered.
In the film, a schoolgirl’s private journal becomes a best-seller after she accidentally hands it in as a homework assignment.
Descendants 2 Premieres (2016)
On this day in 2016, Descendants 2, premiered on the Disney Channel.
A sequel to the 2015 film Descendants, the film starred Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, and Booboo Stewart.
Raven’s House Premieres (2017)
Also on this day in 2017, Raven’s House premiered on the Disney Channel.
The series was spinoff of That’s So Raven, and centered around Raven Baxter,a divorced mother of twins who lives with Chelsea her childhood best friend.
Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff Opens (2018)
On this day in 2018, Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff opened in Pixar Pier.
The shop replaced Sideshow Shirts in Disney California Adventure.
Turner and Hooch Debuts (2021)
On this day in 2021, Turner and Hooch debuted on Disney+.
Based on the 1989 film of the same name, the series starred Josh Peck as Scot Turner Jr., a cop who inherits an unruly dog.
