‘Elemental’ Crosses $300 Million at the Box Office
Just a few weeks ago, Pixar’s latest film Elemental opened to a disastrous $29 million start.
The $200 million film had received a tepid response at the Cannes International Film Festival, and finished in a distant second place to The Flash.

Critics, including yours truly, were quick to point out that Pixar had bombed again at the box office, and that the once infallible studio was in trouble.
As it turns out, reports of Pixar’s demise, and the narrative surrounding Elemental may have been premature.

Elemental Finds Its Stride
Quickly following its opening, it became evident that while audiences were not flocking to theaters to see the film, those who did were impressed by what they saw. The film scored an “A” rating on CinemaScore and word of mouth began to spread.
Now, over a month after the film’s initial release, Elemental is still holding strong in theaters, and has managed to pass the $300 million mark worldwide.

Elemental’s $311.6 worldwide gross is enough for the film to top Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and make it the ninth-highest grossing film of the year.
A Slow Burn
Perhaps more impressively however is that the film brought in a solid $8.7 million in its fifth weekend at the domestic box office, representing just a 13% drop from the prior weekend.
Additionally, Elemental managed a cool $28.2 million overseas, just a 6% drop.

The lesson for studios may be to have patience. While blockbuster films like The Flash and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had strong openings before petering out, sometimes it takes a film time to find its audience.
With a little bit of patience, and strong audience scores, Elemental was able to hit its stride. While the film will still likely lose Pixar money, we can safely say that Elemental wasn’t the disaster that many wrote it off as.
