Justin Simien Gives Update on Star Wars Lando Series
Although director Justin Simien is gearing up for the release of Disney’s Haunted Mansion movie on July 28th, another Simien project seems stalled in development.
On Disney Investor Day in 2020, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced that the studio was working on a Lando Calrissian-led Star Wars spinoff series. While little detail was given about what the project would entail, it was announced that Simien would be showrunning the project.
The expectation was that Donald Glover would return to reprise his role as a young Lando Calrissian, after assuming the role from Billy Dee Williams for Solo. While the Star Wars film stumbled at the box office, Glover’s performance was lauded by critics and fans alike.
Since Kennedy’s 2020 announcement, however, updates on the Lando project have been few and far between. At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Kennedy stated that the series was “still happening.”
Justin Simien Gives Update
In an interview with The Direct to promote Haunted Mansion, Simien revealed that little progress has been made on the Lando series since the initial announcement.
“I certainly poured my heart and spent a lot of time working with them to put together a really great show,” Simien said. “It feels like everybody loves it. And, you know, I was told we had to put a pause on it because of scheduling, and the next update I got [was in 2020], some years ago. So I don’t know, I have no idea what’s going on with it.”
With Ahsoka set to hit Disney+ this August, and The Acolyte, Skeleton Crew, and a fourth season of The Mandalorian on the horizon, Disney’s streaming service will be jammed packed with new shows.
Hopefully, however, Disney finds space for Lando.
